We are learning how to add description to our writing by including ideas from our senses and creating Show not Tell sentences. We made skittle rainbows in class and got to hear, smell, touch, see and taste it.

scince fair

Hello fellow bloggers

On Wednesday it was the science fair .My experiment was parachuting eggs and failed the first few times. I should tell you that five hard-boiled eggs gave up their lives during our parachute trials. After they were shattered and beyond help, I ate most of them. But  in the end everything turned out fine and we could safely parachute raw eggs to the ground instead. Read my science report and find out how we made it work.

TITLE
Parachuting Eggs
QUESTION.

Will a parachute made out of cardboard and plastic allow a hard-boiled egg to land without cracking when we drop it from the highest level of the junior playground ?
THESIS.
An egg is a kind of life capsule for a baby animal. Some animals like chickens lay eggs which have the baby inside a hard shell. Humans like to eat  chicken eggs and one way they cook them is to boil the egg whole for about 5 minutes. Then, when the egg cools down, you peel off the shell and eat the egg which will be a bit rubbery but tasty.  If a hard-boiled egg was dropped from the height of the top level of the junior playground, the shell would crack when it landed. Parachutes are devices made out of rope and fabric which people attach to themselves as a safety device in case they need to jump out of an aeroplane. As the person falls, the fabric fills with air and slows the speed of the person so that they can land without being hurt.
HYPOTHESIS.
If you can make a parachute which lets a person fall slowly to the ground without being hurt, then you should be able to make a parachute do the same thing for a hard-boiled egg. We predict that we will be able to design a good parachute for an egg.

EQUIPMENT
AND MATERIALS:
  • Hardboiled eggs
  • Plastic bag
  • String
  • Scissors
  • Plastic netting
PROCEDURE
  1. Do a test by dropping a hard-boiled egg from the top of the playground and observe what happens.
  2. Create a parachute using plastic, netting and string.
  3. Put the hard-boiled egg into the plastic net beneath the parachute and drop it from the playground.
  4. Observe what happens.
OBSERVATIONS:
When we dropped the hard boiled egg by itself it’s shell cracked and shattered, but it  didn’t crack completely. When we dropped the egg with cardboard around it, it looked the same as the one without cardboard but slightly better. Next we tried the egg with a bigger plastic bag and it had less damage.
So, we decided we should enlarge the canopy of the parachute by about three times.
When we dropped the egg using the enlarged parachute canopy, the egg landed safely with no cracks at all.

ANALYSIS
AND
CONCLUSION
The goal of this experiment was to see if a parachute made out of cardboard and plastic would allow a hard-boiled egg to land without cracking when we dropped it from the highest level of the junior playground. The result of our experiment proves that our hypothesis was correct, we were able to design a good parachute for an egg. Our new knowledge gained was that the most important design factor for a parachute is to have a big enough canopy.
